“The Lord’s Prayer” By Susan Morrill
“The Lord’s Prayer” By Susan Morrill is a bilingual prayer song based on the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13. Susan shared the song with me for the first time in a clip from a songwriting retreat she attended with Tommy Walker. When I heard this song, I was immediately drawn to the simple power of the composition. It was unimposing but filled with the power of the Holy Spirit.
I knew I wanted to hear what this song could sound like in the form of a studio demo, so I asked Susan if we could explore that option. She was excited to record the project, so we jumped in. The song is heavily piano-driven but quickly enhanced with soft acoustic guitars, ambient electric guitars, and carefully layered pads. The intimacy of the song demanded sensitivity and a light touch, with the possibility of dynamic growth toward the end of the project. After a few rounds of ideas and edits, we put together a powerful demo that captures the heart of the song with a tighter arrangement, melodic ideas to carry the momentum, and beautiful harmonies in the closing bridge.
